Developmental/ Substantive Editing

What is Developmental or Substantive editing?

Developmental editing (also known as substantive editing) is the most comprehensive and in-depth level of editing. It’s usually the first editing pass by an editor for your manuscript. It focuses on the big-picture elements of your manuscript; its organization, overall structure, and content, rather than sentence-level corrections. During a developmental edit, I’ll work closely with you through editing letters, email, and video calls to help shape and refine your manuscript’s core elements.

I’ll assess your manuscript’s overall flow, chapter arrangement, pacing, and logical progression of ideas or plot. Once the container flows, I’ll look at strengthening character arcs, plot coherence, world-building, and thematic depth. Simultaneously, I’ll identify gaps in information, point out underdeveloped themes, or inconsistencies in plot, character, or argument. All while helping you maintain a consistent and effective voice appropriate for your readers.

Developmental editing is highly collaborative. This may involve multiple rounds of feedback and revision. My goal as an editor is to help the you realize the manuscript’s full potential before it moves on to more detailed line or copyediting. Developmental editing is the most time-intensive editorial service due to its depth and complexity. As a result, it is my most expensive service.

My rates are $.03-$.08 per word, and it absolutely depends on your project and timeline. I do offer a discount on a bundle of services, and I always offer a payment plan if you need one. Contact me for more information.
