What is Indexing?
Indexing is a specialized editorial service that creates a detailed, user-friendly guide to the key topics, names, and concepts in a manuscript, typically found at the end of nonfiction, academic works, and guides or manuals . My job as an indexer is to review your text to identify its important terms, references, and themes. I would alphabetize those terms, and add correct page locations for easy navigation. I would also add cross-referencing by providing “see” and “see also” references to related themes. I would also make sure that the index meets your chosen style and formatting standard.
Indexing is distinct from editing; it requires analytical reading, subject familiarity, and attention to detail to create a navigable, accurate, and comprehensive index.
